It is a moderate to fast growing plant. Evergreen leaves are oval in shape and 2 to 4 inches long. The fresh new growth on these attractive evergreen shrubs is bright red fading to green as it matures. Oval leaves emerge red and mature into dark evergreen foliage that lasts throughout the winter.

Also known as fraser photonia it is an excellent low maintenance shrub for hedges and privacy screens. Small white clusters of flowers with an unpleasant smell appear in mid spring and are followed by red berrylike fruits. The main event is the striking red color of the new shoots as they burst from their winter buds. With its glossy evergreen leaves it always looks attractive and in spring it really puts on a show.
